THE FASHION STARTUP ACADEMY

How to Start a Clothing Brand With No Experience

THE EXPERT SUPPORT FIRST-TIME
FASHION FOUNDERS NEED WHILE BUILDING A CLOTHING BRAND

The fashion industry doesn't give first-time founders a handbook and without one, even the most passionate and determined founders end up going in circles

  • researching for months

  • spending money on the wrong things too early

  • wondering why nothing is moving

What changes everything isn't more research; it's having someone who knows this industry from the inside, alongside you while you build your clothing brand.

That's what the Fashion Startup Academy gives you.

What Is the Fashion Startup Academy?

A six-month, one-to-one mentoring programme for first-time clothing brand founders, built around three layers of support.

01

The Framework

The LAUNCH Method™ - six milestones that take you from idea to launched brand, in the right order.

02

The Resources

A private online hub with on-demand videos, worksheets, and planning tools to build your knowledge at every stage.

01

The Mentoring

Fortnightly one-to-one sessions with me, plus WhatsApp access between sessions for quick questions. Tailored entirely to your brand, your stage, and your decisions.

Launching A Fashion Brand Is Not Linear...

Most aspiring founders think launching a clothing brand is only about ideas and finding a manufacturer.

But brands don’t struggle because of creativity; they struggle because they skip important stages.

Often founders will...

• Jump into sampling without validating demand
• Build a logo before defining positioning
• Focus on Instagram before understanding margins
• Launch without a commercial strategy

Fashion businesses fail quietly when their foundations are weak, and launching successfully requires capability in six key areas, not just motivation.

You don't need to come from the fashion industry to start a brand. But you do need to understand how the industry works if you want to do it properly. That's exactly what I'm here for.

That’s why I built a whole system around it - The LAUNCH Method™

Six Milestones - One outcome

The Fashion Startup Academy is built around my signature  LAUNCH Method™.  A structured six-milestone framework that takes you from idea to launched brand, with industry knowledge and mentoring support built into every stage. It works wherever you're starting from.

L – Lay the Foundations
You clarify your goals, capacity, expectations and commitment. You stop treating this like a side idea and start treating it like a business.

A – Analyse the Market
You define your ideal customer, study competitors, assess pricing landscapes and identify where your brand genuinely fits.

U – Understand Your Brand & Offer
You refine your concept, define your positioning, establish your brand identity and structure your product offering properly.

N – Navigate Product Development
You move into design, tech packs, sampling, supplier communication and costing with professional oversight.

C – Confirm Production & Commercial Strategy
You finalise margins, pricing, manufacturing timelines, logistics and ensure your numbers support long-term sustainability.

H – Hit the Market Strategically
You build a structured launch runway, refine messaging, prepare your website and execute a launch plan designed for traction – not guesswork.

This Is What You Don't Get Anywhere Else

The LAUNCH Method™ gives you the framework. The resource hub gives you the knowledge. But neither of those things can do what the 1:1 mentoring does.

Every fortnight, we sit down and look at your brand properly - your specific idea, your specific decisions, your specific stage. Not a generic answer for a generic founder, but my eyes and industry experience on your brand.

• Your positioning
• Your product
• Your pricing
• Your factory decisions
• Your launch strategy

This is where going in circles ends. You won't be left interpreting information alone, second-guessing decisions, or wondering whether you're doing things in the right order.

You have:

• Real fashion industry knowledge handed to you directly - the kind that usually only comes from decades inside the industry

• My eyes on your ideas and business throughout
• Personalised feedback on your product direction
• A sounding board for decisions and answers to all your questions
• Strategic steering when you’re about to overcomplicate things

• Accountability to keep you on track

• Honest direction when something won’t work commercially

It's the difference between trying to build a clothing brand from the outside - guessing at an industry you've never worked in - and building it with an insider walking with you every step of the way.

Who is The Fashion Startup Academy for?

Meet your mentor... Michelle.

I'm Michelle Ramsay, The Fashion Expert® - a fashion designer, consultant, and startup mentor with 20+ years experience in the fashion industry.

I've worked on brands such as ASOS, Topshop, Gymshark, M&S and Primark, and for the past decade I've shared that experience to help first-time founders build their fashion brands.

Most of the people I work with come to me with a brilliant idea and no idea what to do first. They've been going in circles, Googling, researching and spending money in the wrong places.

I created the Fashion Startup Academy for the founders without industry connections or fashion degrees, who need someone who has both to walk alongside them while they build a successful clothing brand.

I can't wait to be that person for you.

Questions You're Probably Already Asking

Do I need fashion industry experience or design skills to join? No. The Academy is built specifically for first-time founders with no fashion background. Most people who join have never worked in the industry, they can't draw, they've never spoken to a factory, and they don't know what a tech pack is yet. What you need is an idea and a commitment to doing this properly. I'll bring the industry knowledge.

How is this different from an online course I could work through at my own pace? The resource hub gives you the knowledge - but the Academy is a mentoring programme, not a course. The thing that makes it different is the fortnightly 1:1 sessions, where I look at your specific brand, your specific decisions, and tell you what to do next. Nobody on a generic course gets that. You're not consuming content and hoping it applies to you. You're building your actual brand, with someone who knows the fashion industry from the inside, with you every step of the way.

What does a typical mentoring session actually look like? Every fortnight we meet on Zoom and work through wherever you are in your milestone. We might review your market research, work through a factory decision, audit a sample, look at your pricing structure, or map out your launch plan. You bring your questions and your current work; I bring 20+ years of real industry experience. Sessions are recorded so you can revisit them whenever you need to.

What if my idea isn't fully formed yet - is it too early to join? No. Refining and validating your idea is exactly what the first milestone - Lay the Foundations - is designed for. Many founders join at this stage. They know they want to start a clothing brand but haven't yet defined their customer, their product range, or their market positioning. That's precisely where we begin.

What if I've already spent money on things that didn't work - how do I know this will be different? Because this is not self-guided learning. The reason most founders end up spending money in the wrong places is that they're doing the wrong things in the wrong order, or making decisions without understanding how the fashion industry actually works. With fortnightly sessions, I can see when that's happening and redirect you before it costs you anything. The programme is designed to save you money - not just give you more information.

What if I sign up and don't follow through? That's one of the most honest questions you can ask, and it's one almost every founder thinks but rarely says out loud. The fortnightly sessions are specifically designed for this. Having someone who knows your brand, expects to hear from you every two weeks, and will notice if you've gone quiet is the thing that keeps founders moving when life gets in the way. Accountability is built into the structure - it's not optional.

What if I need more time than six months? You get 12 months of access to the full LAUNCH Method™ resource library from the day you join, and lifetime access to all your session recordings. Some founders move quickly through milestones; others need more time - particularly when building alongside a full-time job or family commitments. If you want to continue with 1:1 mentoring beyond six months, that option is available.

How much does The Fashion Startup Academy cost? The Academy is £1,500 in full, or available on a payment plan to spread the cost. All options include six months of fortnightly 1:1 mentoring and 12 months of access to the full resource hub.

What information do you need from me to get started? A lot less than you might think. Most clients worry they don't have the right things ready, but you genuinely don't need professional files or technical knowledge to begin. To get started, it helps to have some form of inspiration or reference - this could be Pinterest images, a garment you own and love, rough sketches, a written description of your idea, or a combination of all of these. If you have existing CADs, design files or measurements, bring those too and I'll work with what you have. Everything is worked through together on a Zoom consultation before any design or tech pack work begins, so nothing gets missed and you always know exactly what's needed at each stage.

What happens if I have a question between our sessions? You're not left waiting a fortnight every time something comes up. Between sessions, you get access to me on WhatsApp during office hours, Monday to Friday. So if you've got a quick question - a decision you need to make, something you're unsure about, a voicemail you want to send - drop me a message and I'll get back to you. If it's something that needs proper time and focus, we'll save it for the next mentoring session where we can really work through it together. But the small stuff, the quick checks, the "is this right?" moments - those don't have to wait.

Is it worth getting a professional tech pack or can I make my own? In theory, you can make your own but in practice, I've seen first-hand over 20 years what happens when a manufacturer receives an incomplete or inaccurate tech pack, and it's almost always costly. Factories work to exactly what's on the document. If a measurement is missing, they'll guess. If a construction detail is unclear, they'll interpret it their own way. If a trim isn't specified, you'll get whatever they have in stock. The result is sampling errors, delays, and re-sampling costs that quickly exceed what a professional tech pack would have cost in the first place. A professional tech pack is built the way manufacturers expect to receive it - clear, complete, and unambiguous. It protects your budget, your timeline, and your product.

What if my manufacturer comes back with a query about my tech pack? My tech packs are built specifically to the standard factories expect, with over 20 years of experience working with manufacturers in the UK and worldwide. They're designed to be clear, complete and professional from the outset. That said, every factory is different and every product is different, and it's completely normal for manufacturers to come back with clarification questions during the sampling and production process. This is just part of how the industry works and nothing to worry about. You can absolutely navigate these queries yourself, but if you'd like support, I'm always on hand to help. I offer sessions where we can sit down together, go through all of the factory's questions, make a plan and work out the answers, so you always feel confident and in control of your production process.

Do you create tech packs for all types of clothing - womenswear, menswear, childrenswear and activewear? Yes. I design across all major clothing categories including womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, activewear and accessories. Whether you're launching a womenswear collection, a menswear label, a childrenswear range or a sportswear line, the tech pack process is the same, and my experience across all of these categories means I understand the specific construction, sizing and manufacturing requirements each one involves. If you're not sure whether your product falls into a category I cover, just get in touch, chances are I've worked on something very similar before.

I have an unusual or innovative product that's not a typical fashion item. Can you still help? Absolutely, and honestly, these are some of my favourite projects to work on. Not every product fits neatly into a traditional fashion category. Some of my clients come to me with items that solve a problem, have a technical element, work in an unusual way, or combine function with fashion in a way that's genuinely new. It might be an accessory, a practical piece of clothing, a hybrid product, or something that has never quite been made before. These kinds of projects require more thinking about how the product will actually work, how it's constructed, what materials and hardware are needed, and how to communicate all of that clearly to a manufacturer. That's exactly where my technical knowledge and design experience come in. If your product is complex, unusual or innovative, don't let that put you off getting in touch. The more interesting the challenge, the more I enjoy it.

Do you work with sportswear, gym wear, activewear and yoga brands? Yes, sportswear and activewear are a significant part of what I do, and it's a category I have extensive experience in, having worked with major brands including Gymshark and Everlast. Activewear, gym wear, yoga wear and leisurewear require a very different approach to tech packs compared to standard womenswear or casualwear. Performance fabrics behave differently - stretch, recovery, moisture wicking, compression and UPF ratings all need to be specified correctly. Construction methods are more technical, with specific seam types, bonding techniques and machinery involved. Fit is critical and highly performance-specific. And the factories that produce activewear are specialist manufacturers who expect a higher level of technical detail in the documentation they receive. Whether you're launching a gym wear brand, a yoga collection, an ath-leisure line or a high-performance sportswear range, I understand exactly what your tech packs need to include and how to communicate your product to the right type of manufacturer.

Do you work with UK clothing brands and UK manufacturers? Yes, the majority of my clients are UK-based fashion founders and brands, and I have extensive experience working alongside UK clothing manufacturers. I understand the standards, lead times, communication styles and expectations of UK factories, which means your tech packs are built to land well with any UK-based manufacturer you approach. If you're based in the UK and looking to manufacture in the UK, I can also offer guidance on finding the right type of factory for your product as part of my wider mentoring and consultancy services.

Do you work with global brands and manufacturers outside the UK? Yes. While many of my clients are UK-based, I work with fashion founders and brands worldwide, and I have extensive experience working with international manufacturers across Europe, Asia, and beyond. Tech packs are a universal language in the fashion industry. Whether your factory is in Portugal, Turkey, India, China or anywhere else, a well-built tech pack communicates the same information clearly regardless of location. Everything is done remotely via Zoom and email, so wherever you are in the world and wherever your manufacturer is based, that's never a barrier to working together.
