Advice for clothing brand founders - from idea to launch

Whether you're figuring out tech packs, looking for a manufacturer or trying to work out where to start, you'll find honest, experience-backed advice here. Every post is written by Michelle Ramsay, a freelance fashion designer and startup mentor with over 20 years of industry experience.

I recently asked Chat-GPT to act like my drunken bestie and describe what I do. Here's what it had to say and I have to say I kinda like it...

Me on my Hen Do!
Me on my Hen Do!

"Oh my god, babe, listen—you are like the fairy godmother of fashion startups. These poor souls are out here, all starry-eyed, like, “I wanna start a fashion brand!” but they have no clue what they’re doing. Enter you. You swoop in, all fabulous and knowledgeable, and you’re like, “Sit down, take a breath, and let me show you how it’s actually done.”

You take their cute little Pinterest mood boards and wild ideas and turn them into actual, legit brands. You teach them the industry secrets no one tells them, like how to find manufacturers that won’t ghost them, how to get their designs actually made instead of just vibing in their heads forever, and how to launch their brand without looking like an amateur.

And you don’t sugarcoat it. You tell them when their ideas are great, but also when they need to get their sh*t together. Because you care. You don’t just help them start a brand—you help them do it properly, so they don’t waste all their money on nonsense.

Basically, you’re the best friend they didn’t know they needed. And if they don’t work with you, they’ll probably be stuck googling “how to start a fashion brand” for another six months while crying into their oat lattes." 🤩🌶️⭐️

Babe. You’ve been dreaming about this fashion brand for how long now? Stop doom-scrolling and actually do something about it. Book a call with me, and I’ll tell you exactly what you need to do (minus the BS, plus a little tough love). No more ‘what ifs’—just action. Let’s go!

When Kocool, a vibrant Spanish athletic apparel brand, approached me to design several collections over a space of several seasons, I knew it was an exciting opportunity to merge style with performance.

Kocool’s commitment to high-quality, functional activewear that resonates with modern, active lifestyles aligned perfectly with my design ethos and I loved their values of empowering females in sport by using real life athletes and sportswomen in their marketing campaigns.

Over the course of our collaboration, I worked on creating a variety of garments and helped shape collections that truly represented the brand’s identity.

The Scope of the Collections

The collections I designed for Kocool included a versatile range of activewear staples:

  • Leggings – Tailored for performance and comfort, with a focus on technical details like seamless designs, compression panels, and storage pockets.

  • Hoodies and Zip-Through Jackets – Layering essentials with contemporary silhouettes and breathable fabric options.

  • T-Shirts and Vests – Lightweight, sweat-wicking pieces designed for a wide range of activities.

  • Sports Bras and Crop Tops – Supportive and stylish, with attention to detail in fit, coverage, and aesthetic appeal.

This variety of styles allowed for a comprehensive and cohesive offering that would appeal to a diverse audience, from gym enthusiasts to casual wearers looking for performance pieces.

The Design Process

As with any successful collection, the journey from concept to finished product involved several key stages:

1. Concept and Full Collection Design

My first step was to create designs that aligned with Kocool’s brand vision and customer needs. Drawing inspiration from the latest trends in activewear and incorporating timeless design principles, I developed collections that blended functionality with modern aesthetics. Each piece was designed with careful consideration of Kocool’s target market, ensuring the styles were both practical and appealing.

2. Technical Development

Once the designs were approved, I created detailed tech packs and sizing specifications. These documents served as the blueprint for manufacturing, providing precise instructions on measurements, fabric choices, construction methods, and finishing details. Accuracy was paramount at this stage to ensure consistency and quality throughout the production process.

3. Sampling and Refinement

The sampling phase was a collaborative effort between myself, Kocool, and the manufacturing team. As samples were produced, I worked closely with the team to evaluate and refine each style. Adjustments were made to improve fit, functionality, and overall design, with updates to the tech packs as needed. This iterative process ensured that the final products met both Kocool’s and my high standards.

4. Fabric and Technical Features

Activewear demands high-performance materials, so I suggested fabrics that offered the perfect balance of durability, breathability, and stretch. From moisture-wicking textiles to compression fabrics and seamless constructions, every choice was made with the end user in mind. I also recommended technical details such as concealed zippers, mesh panels for ventilation, and ergonomic seam placements to enhance the functionality of the garments.

The Final Results

The collections I created for Kocool were a testament to the power of collaboration. The designs not only captured the brand’s essence but also delivered on the promise of quality and innovation. Customers could enjoy activewear that performed as well during workouts as it did as part of a stylish, everyday wardrobe.

What I Learned

Designing for Kocool was a rewarding experience that highlighted the importance of communication and precision. From aligning creative visions to refining technical details, the process reinforced the value of a thorough, hands-on approach.

Looking Forward

This collaboration with Kocool represents just one example of how I help brands bring their vision to life. Whether it’s athletic apparel, casual wear, or high-end collections, my approach always prioritises the needs of the brand and its audience. If you’re looking to design and launch your own fashion line, I’d love to help you bring your ideas to life.

In the fast-paced world of fashion, staying ahead of the curve requires more than just a keen eye for design. It demands careful planning and foresight. For fashion startups aiming to launch a clothing brand, the secret ingredient lies in the strategic planning of collections and giving yourself enough time. In this blog post, we'll explore the compelling reasons why planning your collections well in advance and adopting a tortoise not hare approach can be the ultimate catalysts for your brand's success.

1. Unleash Your Creative Vision:

When you plan your collections in advance, you're creating a fertile ground for your creative vision to flourish. Instead of being rushed by tight deadlines, you have the luxury of time to explore new design realms and craft pieces that resonate with your unique style. Collate your raw ideas on Pinterest, draw some really rough (or even bad) sketches, and find a professional designer who can translate those raw ideas into tech packs for your manufacturer.

2. Craftsmanship Excellence:

Every stitch, every seam, every intricate detail – they all contribute to the overall quality of your collection. Planning ahead allows you to meticulously select the finest fabrics, experiment with innovative techniques, and ensure that each piece is a testament to your commitment to craftsmanship. The result? Unparalleled quality that sets your brand apart. Allowing yourself enough time will make the sampling process way less stressful and you'll be able to explore multiple potential manufacturing partners.

3. Stay Ahead of Trends:

Fashion is ever-evolving, and being in sync with the latest trends is vital for your brand's relevance. Planning your collections well in advance enables you to anticipate upcoming trends, integrating them seamlessly into your designs. By the time your collection is ready for launch, it'll be relevant to the season and the whole process won't feel rushed.

4. Streamlined Production:

The production process can be a make-or-break factor for any fashion startup. With a well-structured plan in place, you can optimize every step of production. From sourcing materials to final fittings, you'll minimize delays and hiccups, ensuring that your collection comes to life with efficiency and precision. Building in a time buffer will help any roadblocks you may come up against and your factory will thank you too!

5. Build Anticipation:

In the age of social media and instant gratification, building anticipation is an art in itself. When you plan your collections well in advance, you have the opportunity to tease your audience with exclusive sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes glimpses. By the time your collection is unveiled, excitement will be at its peak, generating a buzz that's hard to ignore.

6. Masterful Marketing:

Planning is the foundation of a successful marketing strategy. With a clear timeline, you can craft engaging social media campaigns, strategically collaborate with influencers, and ensure that your collection receives the attention it deserves. Your marketing efforts become synchronized, amplifying the impact of your brand. A realistic launch date means you can build your audience so when you're ready to launch you'll have a client base to market to.

7. Financial Savviness:

Effective financial management is crucial for the sustainability of your startup. Planning your collections allows you to allocate resources wisely, avoid unnecessary expenses, and maximize your profits without compromising on quality. It's a roadmap to financial success that ensures your brand's growth. Having time on your side means you can spread some of the financial commitments and keep an eye on the ever-so-important cash flow.

8. Fashion with Purpose:

In a world increasingly conscious of sustainability, planning ahead enables you to seamlessly integrate ethical and sustainable practices into your designs. By making thoughtful choices from the outset, you create pieces that make a statement not only in style but also in their positive impact on the planet.

Giving yourself a realistic timeframe means you can explore various options, which is not always a quick task.

Conclusion: The journey from fashion startup to industry trailblazer begins with meticulous planning and a realistic launch date. By embracing the power of strategic collection planning, you're setting your brand on a trajectory of success. Unleash your creative genius, refine your craftsmanship, stay ahead of trends, and optimize every aspect of your business. Always include extra time in your planning schedule. It may not be what you want to hear but everything will take much longer than you anticipate. So, start planning, start creating, and watch your fashion startup soar to new heights.
